Angel Xpress Foundation started with a small dream and big determination to provide every underprivileged child with an opportunity to grow, to succeed. With over 10 centers across Mumbai, we are happy that we are well on our way to see that dream be fulfilled.

We’ve Been Growing!

Colaba Centre is up and running
For over two years Ruchita Kenia hd been associated with AXF, arranging outings for kids in association with Cathedral School. One day after atttending a workshop for AXF volunteers by transformation leader Prasad Karmarkar at the Spiritual Company, she took the plunge to change not just her life, but that of many kids in the Colaba area. Thus, the idea of a center in Colaba was born.

Another crusader is Mr Indriyajit Sethi from Union Park, who over the years has offered his office spaces to us. Now, he has procured permission for the Colaba Centre and a large number of volunteers from the Tata Group, which he is part of.

Thanks to both of them, we now have a covered centre opposite the Sai Baba temple at the entrance to Shiv Shakti Nagar near Badhwaar Park.

This centre is also grateful for the support extended by Cathedral School students, teachers and parent bodies as volunteers and contributors.

The Summer Camp at this centre was a blast, as it launched with a story telling session by Purvi Parikh that was followed by an art and craft activity. Aditi and Mehr, along with a team of 8 kids from Cathedral School were a huge help.

Everything came together beautifully!

may16-05We’ve Spread Our Wings Till Powai!

We opened our new center in Powai – in the premises of Sai Baba Temple in Saigalwadi, near Hiranandani Hospital. It opened with an exciting Summer Camp that has already become a super success, going from 17 kids to 70 registrations in just a week.

We tip our hat to Powai resident Suman Basu, who made it all happen, from getting the permission for the space to getting the kids together. We are also happy to welcome the wonderful ladies from the neighborhood who conducted countless activities to make the 10-day summery camp fun-tastic.

Happy Birthday to Us!

May 1st marked the beginning of our 5th year. What started out with baby steps has now become a happy, thriving family. With this, our flagship center at the Bandra Bandstand promenade also completes its 4th year.

We are empowering the fortunate sections of the society, to help the deprived ones. We are addressing a deep seated social problem in a manner that will create real a difference by introducing positive role models and mentors.

Through this model, Angel Xpress Foundation has established its credibility by winning innovation awards and grants from reputed institutions like Linkedin for Good Foundation and Millennium Alliance (a conglomerate of FICCI, ICICI Foundation, US Aid and UK Aid among others).

Even large corporate houses like Larsen & Toubro and Welspun Renewable Energy Pte Ltd have been making regular contributions to help sustain our endeavours.

Most of all because the AXF model lends itself to a franchisee format and can impact very large numbers.

Sometime in 2013 Mayank stumbled upon the AXF center while walking on the Bandstand Promenade; he signed up to teach English to our kids. Soon after Day of Grace 2014, he had completed his course and had to move back to his home town in Udaipur. However that his heart was still here was visible from his continued activity on the center’s Whatsapp group even after he had left the city. Before leaving Mumbai, he had made a promise that he would come back for Day of Grace and sure enough he caught the train to arrive on the 26th of Jan to take the kids through the final dance moves and to take over as host for the evening, a job he did exceedingly well. Kudos to the dedication of our volunteers!.

Creating Feb15_04Creating FuturesFutures

Primarily a volunteering program whence we work with primary school children to help create a rock solid foundation so they can dream of and work towards a better future, we eventually plan to tie up with organizations working with older children both in the academic and in the vocational field. Since passing of class X is key, we have started looking around for sponsors for professional tutoring for our bunch of students moving from Class IX to Class X this year. Even before this happens however we have discovered that we may have already helped a few find their future potential employment.
Four girls from Class 9 at the Santacruz center who have demonstrated exceptional capability in art have been given full scholarship for a professional art course at Artistic Impressions founded by Hansa Jessani. Mrs Jessani also promises job opportunities as art teachers for the girls. A big thank you for giving wings to our fledglings who will have an opportunity to create livelihood from a god given skill.

Friday Kitchen feeds our passion

Jan15_01_Friday KitchenThe story of the Friday kitchen team was what inspired our founder Anubha Sharma to go looking for kids to feed which eventually led to the birth of Angel Xpress.Five women led by Sulekha Malhotra decided during a kitty party that their time and money will be spent better in feeding poor children, from there started the project of satsang over cooking, various offshoots of this idea today feeds an astounding number of children every Friday including a substantial number at AXF. The Juhuteam led by MrsYashi Oberoi and Kirron Kumar among others feeds our children at AXF Juhu while the Bandra offshoot led by Anita Golani and NamrataRajgarhia caters to our children in Santacruz. Most of the children coming to us live in extremely strained circumstances and the treat at the end of the lesson is something they really look forward to.

#TeamSpreadingSmilesspread more than smilesJan15_02_SpreadingSmile

Another story of a citizen’s movement started when AnushkaBasantani the founder of a children’s activity center called Joykidzconnected with us to host one of the 10 events they had planned to commemorate their 10th anniversary. This intention gathered momentum and today a group of over 150 mothers have come together to become a part of a movement called #TeamSpreadingSmiles which is on the verge of completing their 100th event on a quest to create happiness of which among others, the children of Angel Xpress Foundation have been a happy recipient.

The right guidance helps kids ace the OlympiadJan15_03_photo math olympiad

Anushka Basantani decided to go beyond hosting fun events at Angel Xpress Foundation and along with three other mothers from the #TeamSpreadingSmiles made a commitment to coach 4 of our first graders from #AXFJuhu for the Math Olympiad that she specializes in training kids for. In four short months these ladies had taken the kids from counting on their fingers to ace the Math Olympiad in which 600 children from affluent homes who had the support of educated parents to help prepare participated. The future for these children now may go on to be something less than ordinary thanks to their hidden talent having been brought to the fore by these ladies.

What a merry ChristmasJan15_04_Christmas

The Juhu Gymkhana Club arranged for a special Christmas celebration for 120 children from AXFJuhu and 4 women opted to play Santaclaus by sponsoring brand new bikes for 4 of our deserving students who really needed this miracle in their lives.

We were humbled with so much love and recognition all of 2014, that we decided to celebrate our Annual Day of Grace by counting our blessings and charting our growth from good to great.
At the event: We’ll doff our hats to the large hearts of Mumbai – our volunteers, donors, sponsors and our supporters. Our children will put up performances to say “thank you”; plus performances from artists and more.
Block your diary for Day of Grace 2015 on 31st January 2015, Saturday, From 6.30 pm onwards, At The Beautiful Bandra Fort Amphitheater, provided to us once again by the very first citizen’s forum that believed in us “The Bandra Bandstand Resident’s Trust”

None other than Shah Rukh Khan grooves with us at KidzaniaDec14_01_srk with axf kids2

Our wings get gilded with a hint of Glamour – Our children were barely over the wonder of watching Mary Kom with members of the cast in their midst when along came the opportunity for over 650 kids again to view Happy New Year via team spreading smiles. While the kids were sorely disappointed to not have SRK in their midst on that day, soon enough a few of them got the opportunity to shake a leg with the star at #KidzaniaMumbai and got hugs and kisses galore from the man!

Honour of the Millennium

Dec14_02_ma award

Our Founders Anubha Sharma and Beenaa Advani received the Millennium Alliance Innovation Award from The Hon. Minister Shri NItin Gadkari on the morning of 25th November 2014.
Domestic and International organisations like US Aid, UK Aid, FICCI & ICICI Foundation had come together to select 20 recipients from the numerous applications that had poured in for the accompanying grant after a 5 step process through which they engaged in a thorough investigation into all aspects of the projects. Considering we were up against a tough selection criterion and were pitted against many veterans of the sector, we are glad to have emerged one of the winners. The process helped us prove that we don’t just have a great idea but are also using our resources correctly and have put our systems and processes in place. We thank MA for the faith and encouragement conferred upon a young organisation like ours and we thank all our volunteers, teachers and core team members for their support which has brought us to this day!

The Angel Xpress Students become stars as they dance for change

Youth Theatre

The Inner Wheel of the Rotary Bombay Airport has tied up with us to render all kinds of services for our kids across centers. This month, they started by whitening our children’s smiles with a dental camp for our Juhu center at Tilak Udyan, a garden managed by the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport. They also gifted the students smart Puma shoes! Thank you Himadri Lathia and friends for your generosity

Rotary Clubs celebrates Annapoorna Day with us

Annapoorna DayRotary Clubs of Juhu Beach and Bombay Airport celebrated Annapoora Day by spending quality time with our children and sharing tasty treats! Our students interacted with dedicated Rotarians Tushar Gandhi, Kevin Colaco and their teams, and look forward to their next. The visit was part of a country-wide program where Rotarians are feeding 1.2 million children to beat tackle hunger and malnutrition.

And if this wasn’t big enough, Rotarian Kevin Colaco took the trouble to write to Co-Presidents of all 135 Rotary clubs across Mumbai, inviting them to participate in the Angel Xpress cause and host centers in gardens managed by them. Here’s to many more Angel Xpress centers through the city and working with more wonderful Rotarians!

Our students beat Mumbai monsoons, hands downMumbai monsoons

Since all our centers are located in gardens, classes during monsoons become quite a challenge. Torrential rains, leaky roofs, water logging, wet slippery floors push our volunteers to cancel classes. But this time, our students turned the tables entirely! Despite persistent monsoon issues, not only did our students turn up religiously for class but we actually saw a rise in admissions. It is this dedication and love that pushes us harder to give these children all that we can.

Making a trip to the Parle G Factory

Parle G Parle G Tripbiscuits have been a favorite for years amongst all ages, the sweet fragrance of hot batches of biscuits in the area around the factory transporting most of all to our childhoods. Students from the Rotaract Club of H.R.College took our Santacruz children to get a firsthand experience of the making and baking of the Parle G biscuits. Our students came back with a smile on their face, packets of biscuits and bundles of memories! Thank you Simran Talwar, Simoni and Purav Desai for the tasty trip.

Will you help us open our next centre?
